伊藤新道 Ito Shindo Trail

　伊藤新道は、長野県大町市を流れる高瀬川上流部と、北アルプス最深部の黒部川源流域をつなぐ登山道だ。高瀬川の支流・湯俣川の谷と鷲羽岳の尾根を通る高低差１１５０メートルのルートで、黒部川源流域に立つ三俣山荘へ最短でアクセスできる。１９５６年に三俣山荘の前身・三俣蓮華小屋の主人だった故・伊藤正一は建築資材の運搬のためにこの道を拓いた。高瀬ダムの建設による登山者の減少や、ルート上の橋の崩壊などで、１９８３年には通行困難となったが、現在、山荘の２代目・伊藤圭は再開通を目指している。

　私は２０１７年に三俣山荘を初めて訪れ、この道を知った。圭へのインタビューや、正一が残した開拓期の写真を見ることは、伊藤新道を知ることにとどまらず、日本の山小屋や登山という行為そのものについて考えるきっかけとなった。山小屋は単なる宿泊施設ではない。圭の弟で雲ノ平山荘を営む伊藤二朗は山小屋の存在を「人と自然の関係性を生み出す前線基地」だと説明する。国立公園内に私営の山小屋が点在する日本アルプスを歩くとき、山小屋やそれぞれの山域固有の歴史や文化に触れることは、とてもスピリチュアルで創造性を喚起する体験だ。

Introduction

Ito Shindo Trail is a mountain trail that connecting the upper reaches of the Takase River, which runs through Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture, and the headwaters of the Kurobe River, the deepest part of the Northern Alps. It runs through the valley of Yumata River, a tributary of the Takase River, and the ridge of Washibadake (Mt.Washiba), providing the shortest possible access to Mitsumata Mountain Lodge, which stands at the headwaters of the Kurobe River. In 1956, the late Shoichi Ito, the owner of the Mitsumata Lotus Hut, the predecessor of Mitsumata Mountain Lodge, pioneered this route to transport construction materials. The decrease in the number of climbers due to the construction of the Takase Dam and the collapse of bridges on the route made the trail impassable in 1983, but Kei Ito, the second-generation owner of the mountain lodge, is currently working to reopen it.

I first visited the Mitsumata Mountain Lodge in 2017 to learn about the trail. Interviewing Kei and looking at photos of the pioneering period left by Shoichi was a great way to get to know the Ito Shindo Trail. It made me think about Japanese mountain lodges and climbing itself. Mountain lodges are more than just a place to stay. Jiro Ito, Kei’s younger brother who runs Kumonodaira Mountain Lodge, describes them as “a frontline base to bridge up people and nature”. Walking through the Japan Alps dotted with private mountain lodges in the national park, is a very spiritual and thought-arousing experience to get in touch with the unique history and culture of the lodges and each mountain range.
